SHOULD I BUY EXTENDED WARRANTY ON MY ELECTRONICS?
SHOULD I BUY EXTENDED WARRANTYON MY ELECTRONICS? I really don’t like to use the word Warranty because it is very limited from the manufacturer. Different stores have different names for their’s, so for the sake of this article I will call them Performance Service Plan or PSP for short. The usual warranty on let’s say a new LCD, LCO’S, or DLP Rear Projector is nothing on the remote, nothing on the fans and you would have to have 19 pixels out to be a manufacturing defect. Not bad on the pixels out if you have 2.4 million pixels, but very noticeable. Other than that they have 90 days in home parts & labor. From 91 to 360 days they have parts & labor but you have to pay $85.00 to $110.00 to get a house call, (and you thought Doctor’s were bad). DO NOT call the store after 30 days because it’s a LIMITED MANUFACTURER’S WARRANTY! You might say that you had a 27” TV for 10 years with no problem. You had 0 moving parts, (On big screen rear CRT projections you had 6 moving parts), with today’s thin rear projections, let’s say a DLP, you have 2.4 million moving mirrors, two fans, (One to cool off the DLP Chip & one to cool off the bulb), and a spinning color wheel that revolves about 10,200 RPM. Kind of like working on you car nowadays! In short people, if the store covers the Remote Control, the fans, only 1 pixel out, GET A PSP! Another good reason for a PSP is if you had a Mitsubishi CRT rear projection and they could not fix it, since Mitsubishi no longer makes them, they would get you into the new DLP Mitsubishi with 1080P. I own the 2007 Mitsubishi DLP, if it dies there would a big smile on my face because I would be getting the 2008 or later 1080P DLP. Some stores will even cover the bulb like Fry’s Electronics, so in 5 yrs you WILL be going through a bulb that would cost you between $200.00 and $400.00. Last, EVERY Consumer Organization such as mine would recommend it if it covers MORE than the Manufacturer’s Warranty. |
