LARGE SCREEN TV’SPLASMA TV Plasma TV’s are thin and range in size generally from 42” to 61” for Consumers. There is a 102” I saw at the CES in Jan. 2005, but it was a prototype, besides if you had $253,000.00 to blow on a TV, adopt me! There’s a lot going against the Plasma. It’s temperature sensitive, (there are special one’s that are not for the general consumer). They are Altitude sensitive, (again there are special ones that are not). If you have a lot of light in the room they have a glass front that is highly reflective. They use more electricity, (Sony 61” 770 watts, my Mitsubishi DLP 240 watts). DO NOT hook up a Plasma TV to a Computer because you can get a burn in like the old CRT Big Screen TV’s. Let’s get real for a minute. Most people that buy a Plasma TV and hang them an the wall put a 20” or 25” rack below to put their electronics on them. Soooo where is the space they save,. Of course you can take the kitchen chair and put next to the rack, stand on it and bend over and say you are saving space in your house! I’ve been hearing a lot lately about a Plasma TV only lasting only a couple of years. Back a few years ago when the cheapest Plasma for a 42” EDTV was $3,000.00. Those would last about 2 to 3 years. Kind of shows you that cheapest in electronics is not always the best. Alright time for Doc’s Picks in order from good on down, Panasonic, Pioneer, Samsung, JVC, Toshiba, Viewsonic, and on down. P.S. My staff and I are getting tired of people buying a Plasma and then sending me an E-Mail when the thing dies. I’m a nice guy, but all I can do is to tell you I told you to buy a Mitsubishi DLP in the first place BIG SCREEN CRT PROJECTION TV We now call these the PROP JOBS, as the new DLP Rear Projections are called the JETS! As with standard CRT TV’s The days are about up, if not gone. The new DLP’s are better, lighter, twice the viewing angle, and do not slowly loss their color. The DLP is both better and cheaper to buy than the old big screen CRT’s, Plasma and LCD screens. LCD REAR PROJECTION Well Sony or JVC were the last companies dumb enough to male an LCD rear projection or LCOS TV and are no longer made. DLP was and will be your best bet. My pick for a DLP is Mitsubishi for the following reasons. Brighter bulb, (which in 2009 went down to $99.00 and lasts about 5,000 to 6,000 hours), 6 color processing, lighted remote that DOES work audio equipment, stretch plus, instead of a tint that you could never get your colors right you can adjust each of the 6 colors individually. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE check out DLP!!!! LCOS (Liquid Crystal On Silicon) There were only a few manufactures of LCOS. Sony, JVC , Philips. These companies no longer make them. PLEASE check out DLP! DLP is so good that ALL new movie theaters use DLP, because it does NOT have a degenerative effect that EVERYTHING else has! DLP (Digital Light Processing) Now we get to my favorite in a Big Screen, the DLP! It works basically like the LCD and LCOS, (bulb, fan, etc.), but the big thing is the contrast ratio and is a little crispier. Not ALL DLP’s are the same. Day in and day out people come into my store, (I work part time at Fry’s Electronics in Las Vegas, NV), and tell me they did their homework and found out the DLP’s the best and what’s the cheapest DLP we have. That’s like telling me that a car is better that a horse, and what’s the cheapest car I have. Sooooooo, you might want to know what DLP I have, (the one that I use as a monitor to build this web site on). It’s the Mitsubishi of course for many, many reasons. Before we go on, NO!, Mitsubishi did NOT give me the TV for FREE, and I’m not on Mitsubishi’s AD budget, but I have to own something, right! First off since I can’t get a burn in and I’m over 50 and wear glasses, I use my Mits for a Computer Monitor, (as do some Hospitals to read MRI’s). Other websites like Consumer Reports and CNET get a lot of information by forums. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB! A person buying a TV and giving a report is not the way to do it. The way is in the trenches like I am! I do a side by side comparison. Just because a company like Samsung supports the NFL out of YOUR back pocket, that does NOT make it better. Soooo lets compare! MITSUBISHI SAMSUNG LED DLP REAR PROJECTION I’m not that impressed! Sure the LED’s last longer than a Mercury Based Lamp, but it is NOT user replaceable. Samsung claims that the LED unit will last 20,000 hours, (They could not supply me with independent lab results on that). They also changed on their website to 60,000 hours and STILL cannot supply an independent report and they DO NOT offer a longer warranty tan any body else, kind of makes you think there? Know the contrast ratio & life expectancy will be a lot higher on the Laser DLP when Mitsubishi comes out with the Laser DLP in 2008, about 125,000 hours. That’s why Mitsubishi leap froged over Samsung and never bothered with LED! |
